Augmentation cystoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to enlarge the bladder when it is unable to hold an adequate amount of urine due to conditions such as neurogenic bladder dysfunction, bladder exstrophy, or chronic bladder inflammation. The goal of the procedure is to increase the bladder’s capacity and reduce pressure within the urinary system, which can help improve bladder function and decrease the risk of urinary incontinence or bladder damage. During the surgery, the surgeon typically takes a section of the intestine, usually the sigmoid colon or a portion of the small intestine, and attaches it to the bladder to increase its size. This creates a larger reservoir for urine storage and allows for more normal urinary function. This procedure improves bladder capacity and compliance, allowing for more efficient urine storage and reducing the frequency of urination. It can help alleviate symptoms such as urinary urgency, incontinence, and recurrent urinary tract infections. By restoring bladder function, the procedure can also improve the overall quality of life for individuals affected by bladder dysfunction. Mrs. Parbin Sultana from Assam successfully underwent Augmentation Cystoplasty at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. V. Surya Prakash, Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic, Robotic & Transplant Surgeon.
