Bilateral knee replacement is a surgical procedure in which both of the patient’s knees are replaced at the same time. It is typically recommended for patients who have severe arthritis in both knees or other conditions that have caused significant damage to the knee joint. The procedure involves removing the damaged knee joints from both knees and replacing them with artificial knees called prostheses.
Following surgery, the patient may be required to use crutches or a walker for a few weeks, and physical therapy may be recommended to regain strength and mobility. Pain relievers may also be required for a few weeks. The surgery can help relieve pain and improve mobility, allowing the patient to return to normal activities in three to six weeks.
Since knee replacement is a major procedure, complications like infections, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage, and failure of the artificial joint are possible. Hence, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with a doctor before making a decision.
