Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the damaged knee joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint (prosthesis). This helps in relieving pain and restoring function to the severely damaged knee joints.
The majority of knee replacements have a lifespan of more than 15 years and provide pain relief, improved mobility, and a higher quality of life. Most of your daily activities can be resumed three to six weeks after surgery.
However, because knee replacement is a major surgery, there is a risk of complications such as infections, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage, artificial joint failure, and the need for blood transfusions.
