Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves replacing the damaged mitral valve (the valve that controls blood flow between the heart’s left atrium and left ventricle) without the need for open-heart surgery. In this procedure, a catheter is threaded through blood vessels and a new valve is guided into place, effectively restoring proper blood flow and alleviating symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain. This procedure helps to treat problems like regurgitation (leaking of blood backward) or stenosis (narrowing) associated with a damaged mitral valve.
Advantages of TMVR include shorter recovery times, reduced pain, and fewer complications post-procedure. However, like any medical intervention, TMVR carries certain risks and potential complications. These may include the risk of infection, damage to blood vessels, irregular heart rhythms, or the possibility of the new valve not functioning as expected, requiring further intervention. However, the potential benefits often outweigh the risks for many patients requiring mitral valve replacement.
Mr. Shaik Bahadur from Hyderabad successfully underwent Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Bharat Vijay Purohit, Sr. Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & Director of Cath Lab.
