Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition in which the patient experiences terrible pain on one side of their face. The trigeminal nerve is affected by this disorder (the nerve that transmits sensations from the face to the brain).
During a surgical treatment called radiofrequency ablation, high-frequency heat is used to disable the brain’s capacity to send pain signals to the trigeminal nerve.
The patient is anesthetized before a needle is placed into the mouth corner to access the trigeminal nerve at the base of the skull. An x-ray is taken to confirm the nerve’s location. When the patient falls asleep again, the doctor directs radiofrequency heat to damage the nerve which creates a feeling of numbness in the face in conjunction with acupuncture, thus relieving pain.
The patient is monitored in the hospital for 6 to 8 hours after surgery. After surgery, driving and operating machinery should be avoided.
Mr. S. Kartikeya from Jharkhand, underwent a Radiofrequency Ablation for Trigeminal Neuralgia, under the supervision of Dr. B. Ravisuman Reddy, Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
