Total knee replacement (TKR), or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to replace damaged knee joints with artificial joints called prostheses. This surgery is recommended for patients with severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
TKR is a surgical procedure that is performed under general anaesthesia. It usually takes about one to two hours to complete. During the procedure, a cut is made over the knee, then the damaged bone and cartilage are removed while leaving healthy bone intact, and the implants are placed where required.
Knee replacements improve quality of life by minimising pain and improving mobility. However, like any surgery, there are risks associated with TKR, such as blood clots, nerve damage, and an elevated risk of infection.
Based on the patient’s age and health, recovery from TKR can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. After the surgery, the patient is advised to undergo physiotherapy to help regain strength and movement in the replaced knee joint. Pain relievers may also be prescribed to ease any pain or discomfort during the recovery process.
Dr. R. M. Noble from Hyderabad successfully underwent Total Knee Replacement (Right Leg) at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Venuthurla Ram Mohan Reddy, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.
