What is a Maxillary Sinus Lift Procedure?
A maxillary sinus lift is a way to restore the bone’s density by elevating, lifting, or augmenting the sinus membrane. This creates a space facilitating bone growth between the sinus and jawbone for dental implants. When the bone in the upper jaw has completely resorbed, the maxillary sinus is situated near the upper jaw, or individuals with a thin upper jaw and who experience tooth loss in the upper jaw require this procedure.
There are two primary types of maxillary sinus lift procedures: the Lateral Window Approach (external method) and the Crestal Approach (internal method).

Maxillary Sinus Lift: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgical Preparations:
- This may include a thorough medical and dental history, a clinical examination, and imaging tests like a CT scan to assess the sinus cavity.
- It may also include restrictions on any past medication, taking any recently prescribed antibiotics, and stopping smoking.
- As per the surgeon’s instructions, it may be necessary for you to fast for a few hours prior to the surgery, wear loose clothing, and engage in the company of a trustworthy companion.
Procedure: The surgeon makes an incision on the gum tissue of the back teeth and creates a small opening into the jawbone. They gently lift the sinus membrane at the lining of the sinus cavity and load the cavity with bone-forming material to create more bone for the implant placements. The cavity is then closed with the sutures, and both the bone and sutures are left to heal.
Post-Surgical & Recovery Phase:
Follow dietary and activity restrictions and smoking to avoid irritation and discomfort at the surgical site. Apply the ice pack for at least 2 days and perform pain management to promote better healing.
Try to avoid nose blowing and sneezing as much as possible, and if this becomes necessary, sneeze with the mouth wide open to minimise the pressure.
