What is LSCS (Lower segment Caesarean section)?
Sometimes, a vaginal delivery may not be possible because of some complications. In these situations, the obstetrician performs a surgical delivery by creating an incision in the mother’s abdomen and the uterus. Cesarean section nowadays is a commonly conducted & safe procedure. A cesarean section is advised as a planned mode of delivery in case some issues are identified beforehand. Some of the reasons include:
- The baby’s head-down position is not what is expected around the due date.
- Maternal health conditions like heart disease, infections, etc. that can cause risk to the mother or the unborn child.
- Multiple pregnancies or more than one baby (twins or triplets).

Lower Segment Cesarean Section: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation for LSCS
Before the surgery, your medical status will be evaluated by performing some tests. The individual is asked to fast for a few hours before surgery & take a shower with antibacterial soap at night or in the morning. A complete preparation for a hospital stay for a few days with all the necessary things packed in a bag is required.
During LSCS procedure
Once in the procedure room, you will be administered spinal or epidural anesthesia to reduce the likelihood of pain during the procedure. The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is first drained to improve access to the infant. After a tiny incision is made in the lower portion of the uterus, the baby is removed carefully, the umbilical cord is cut, the placenta is fully removed, and the incisions are finally closed with sutures.
C-section recovery
Although the optimal healing period is approximately 4-6 weeks, the patient may experience pain and vaginal discharge for several weeks during this time.
Post-Op Care:
- The incision after a cesarean section requires time to heal. It is best to relax and avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, and sit-ups.
- If possible, arrange for someone to help you with childcare, housework, cooking, and other such activities.
- You may experience some pain in the belly area and may need medications as per your obstetrician’s advice.
- Give yourself some time to recover from delivery before you venture into fitness and a full-blown exercise regimen. First, let your body heal, and then, when you are ready, begin with small steps and short-term goals.
- Follow-ups.
