What is K wire fixation?
K-wire fixation is a common procedure used to hold small bones in place and improve stabilization in children and adults with hand and leg fractures. The location of the fracture, the patient’s age and weight, and other factors are taken into consideration when choosing the k wire’s size. A k wire with the ideal diameter is used to ensure precise insertion and effective stabilization. This procedure can be performed intraosseously (inserting a k wire into the bone with a drill) or percutaneously (inserting a k wire through the skin).

K-wire Fixation: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation
Imaging tests, such as X-rays, & physical examinations are performed to evaluate the fracture and properly plan the procedure. Additionally, the patient is asked to refrain from taking any medications that could interfere with the procedure, such as blood thinners, and is instructed to fast for a few hours.
During K wire Surgery
Once in the procedure room, you will be administered general or local anesthesia to reduce the likelihood of experiencing pain during the procedure. K-wire is sometimes inserted directly through the skin; other times a small hole is made directly into the bone using a drill to access the fracture site, align, and hold the broken bone in place, and x-rays guide its position. Following the kirschner wire’s placement, the bone is stabilized. If necessary, any protruding wire ends are then further supported by clamps or an external frame. Finally, any cuts are closed, & a cast is put on for additional support.
K- Wire Surgery Recovery
The patient may require a hospital stay for a few days. The recovery period may vary from individual to individual; however, the ideal healing period ranges from 3 to 4 weeks or much longer.
Post-Op Care:
- Take enough rest and avoid putting any pressure on the affected limb
- Keep your limb in an elevated position to minimize the swelling.
- Take painkillers as prescribed to ease your discomfort.
- If any incision is made, keep it clean & dry.
- If you experience severe pain, swelling, redness, or any shifts in the wire, or if you detect any unpleasant odor from a splint, call your doctor immediately.
- Do wear a splint or cast to ensure movement limitation for a few weeks.
- Follow-up for knowing the progress & removal of K wire.
