Why would I be referred to fetal medicine?
A woman may be referred to a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist for high-risk pregnancy due to medical conditions like heart disease or diabetes, fetal anomalies, or genetic issues identified in screenings. Women with a history of pregnancy complications, such as miscarriages or stillbirths, may also be referred for specialized care.Â
What is a fetal medicine scan?Â
A fetal medicine scan, or fetal ultrasound, is a safe imaging technique used to assess the health and structure of a fetus in the womb. It can screen for structural, genetic, or growth issues, evaluate the fetus’s size, movements, placenta, and amniotic fluid, and examine the heart and blood vessels.Â
What is the difference between a 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasound?
2D ultrasounds produce flat, black-and-white images used for monitoring pregnancy, showing internal organs and skeletal structure. 3D ultrasounds provide detailed, three-dimensional views of facial features and body shapes, helping detect abnormalities like cleft lip, typically done between 26 and 30 weeks. 4D ultrasounds capture live-motion images, allowing parents to see real-time movements and aiding in procedures that require real-time guidance.
Are fetal scans safe?
A fetal scan is a safe method to assess the health of an unborn baby. During a fetal ultrasound, the baby’s heart, head, spine, and other body parts are carefully examined. The scan can be performed either on the mother’s abdomen (transabdominal) or inside the vagina (transvaginal).Â
