A groundbreaking minimally invasive technique for treating Achalasia, a swallowing disorder caused by damage to the nerves in the esophagus. This condition can make it difficult to swallow liquids or food. POEM is an endoscopic therapy that utilizes an upper endoscopy rather than conventional surgery, which involves incisions in the skin.

In patients with achalasia, the lower esophageal sphincter is abnormally tight. The goal of all treatments for achalasia is to weaken this sphincter. POEM is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure designed to treat achalasia and other swallowing disorders.

This is an in-patient procedure and can take between one and three hours to complete.

A benefit of this endoscopic procedure is that it involves no incisions in the chest or abdomen and typically results in a minimal or sometimes no hospital stay post-procedure. The procedure relieves the tightness and allows the esophagus to empty as it normally should, facilitating the passage of food into the stomach.

Yashoda Hospitals has performed hundreds of POEM procedures and is one of only a few hospitals in the country to offer this advanced technique. We are also one of the highest-volume centers for this procedure.

The Department of Gastroenterology at Yashoda Hospitals is equipped with the most advanced facilities and is managed by a team of expert gastroenterologists who use the latest diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to deliver high-quality care for a wide variety of gastrointestinal and liver conditions.
