What is Sonography Test?

Sonography is a modern diagnostic tool that uses ultrasound (which is a high-frequency sound wave) to develop visual images of organs inside your body. It helps capture live images of the organs, tissues and blood flow inside your body. The Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) Test is, therefore, also known as Sonogram, USG, or simply Ultrasound. When you go for a USG, you will be assisted by a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, who is a medical professional specifically trained to perform Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) tests. This procedure is non-invasive and also has no side effects.

      Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) used for?

Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) is the most preferred diagnostic tool after the X-ray. It is used to understand the size, shape, and density of any internal organs, internal body tissues, or any other internal structure of the body. This diagnostic test is most commonly used on the lower abdomen to check for pregnancies in women.

How to understand the test results of Sonography (Ultrasound / USG)?

A Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) test result is a set of mirrored images of the area of your body being examined. It is quite complex and usually incomprehensible to the untrained eye. However, with some effort and understanding of an infant’s anatomy in the womb, you may be able to understand the results of a USG test.

Why do I need Sonography (Ultrasound / USG)?

A Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) test is useful in identifying any injury or abnormal growth inside the body. You may need a USG test if your doctor suspects any injury (usually in the chest or abdominal region). However, you will definitely need a USG if you are pregnant and wish to monitor the health of your growing baby.

What happens during Sonography (Ultrasound / USG)?

Before a Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) test, you will be asked to drink a lot of water to keep your bladder full. During the test, you will have to lie on an examination table with your abdomen facing the ceiling. The technician will apply a cool lubricating jelly on your exposed abdomen and then begin to use the transducer to transmit ultrasound into your abdomen.

      What sonography can detect?

Sonography is used to detect a variety of things inside your body. It can detect and monitor a growing baby inside the womb. It can also detect stones in the liver, kidney, gallbladder, etc. A Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) test is also used on many instances to detect cancerous growth inside the body like a tumour.

What's the difference between sonography and ultrasound?

Sonography (Ultrasound / USG) is a diagnostic tool that is used as a medical imaging technique. It uses high-frequency sound waves (known as ultrasound) to create images of the different structures inside the body. Sonography is just another name for an ultrasound. Ultrasound is one of the most popular diagnostic tools after the X-ray.

      What do ultrasound results show?

The test results of an ultrasound show the overall health and development of a baby inside the mother’s womb. It is often used regularly on pregnant women to monitor the growth of their developing babies. However, it can also be used to detect any problems with internal organs like the heart, liver, kidneys, or even female reproductive organs.

What does P mean on ultrasound?

The ‘P’ in an ultrasound test report means a parity number of deliveries that are more than 20 weeks. It is a medical terminology used by doctors, and your doctor will most likely explain its significance to you before or after the delivery of your baby.

      What is abnormal ultrasound?

If the test results of your ultrasound are abnormal, it means there is something wrong with the development of your baby. It can also mean that the results have shown something out of the ordinary that the doctor will most likely examine further. You can book an appointment or even get a free second opinion to help you out in such cases.

Is sonography the same as USG?

The term sonography means ‘sound writing’, and technicians who operate sonography machines are known as sonographers. On the other hand, ultrasonography means ‘extreme sound writing’ because it uses ultrasound to develop images. Nowadays, ultrasonography (USG) and sonography have become synonymous. They are technically not the same thing. However, practically, they are used to refer to the same diagnostic procedure.
