Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scan in India
Expert Dental Care With Advanced CBCT Technology at Yashoda Hospital:
What is Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scan?
A more advanced dental imaging technique called a cone beam CT scan can help rule out hidden dental issues because, unlike traditional X-rays, it creates a 3D image rather than just a 2D view of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures.Â
FOV refers to the part of the patient’s anatomy that will be included in the data volume or exposed to radiation.Based on the FOV, the CBCT scan can be categorised into small, medium, and large FOV CBCTs that cover specific regions like a single tooth, certain areas such as the jaw, teeth, & surrounding areas, or an entire maxillofacial region, including the sinuses.
Our Department of Dental Surgery at Yashoda hospitals is dedicated to placing oral health at the forefront of comprehensive care. How is Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scan done?
Prior to the CBCT scan, the patient should take off any jewelry around the neck, earrings, or any other metal objects, such as dental braces or hairpins, as these could interfere with the scan.Â
The patient is instructed to sit or stand in front of the CBCT machine during the procedure, placing their chin & head on a supporting bar, and making sure the target area or focus point is in the center of the machine. After the individual is positioned and advised to stay still, during the few minutes of the scan, the technician activates the CBCT machine that rotates around the head & captures multiple images from various angles to provide a 3D view of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. This aids in the assessment of any dental problems and directs the planning of their treatment.
CBCT ensures high precision in the detection of tumors, cysts, or other dental issues while minimising damage to surrounding tissues. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive 360-degree view of the dental anatomy, leaving no room for the tumour or other serious oral issues, such as lesions, tooth fractrures, or even a failed root canal to hide.Â

Who needs Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scan (CBCT)?
- In individuals with certain symptoms such as swelling, pain, or abnormalities in the oral cavity, CBCT is employed to rule out suspected tumors and infections.
- CBCT assists in gathering data on bone density, quality, and structure for seamless dental implantation in patients who require therapeutic implants because of missing teeth.
- Effective in individuals with failed root canal therapy to rule out the suspected calacified canals or any missed canals through 3D view to procedure with the treatment plan once again.
- In individuals with pain & stiffness in the jaw, CBCT helps to understand the anatomy of this joint to rule out suspected tempomandibular joint dysfunction.
Thus, CBCT technology is applicable in every area of dentistry, including orthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery/pathology, periodontics, and implant treatment planning, making it an ideal choice for a dentist for better individualized treatment.
