Is Turp considered major surgery?

Turp or prostatectomy, is a major surgery with certain serious risks and complications. It is advised to get a second opinion for all the other options before this surgery.

What is the success rate of TURP surgery?

TURP offers high success rates and was the first successful minimally invasive surgical procedure of this modern era , and like any other surgery has its own risks and complications that need to be considered.

How serious is TURP surgery?

TURP has its own risks and potential complications. This surgery carries a very small risk of causing death and the risks usually arise from complications from heart or a severe postoperative infection. The risk of dying from this surgery is less than 1 in 1000.

How long does it take to fully recover from TURP surgery?

It takes 9-14 days for the scab which is formed after the surgery to peel while the prostate surface begins to heal. A time period for about 3-6 weeks is required for complete recovery from this surgery.

Does the prostate grow back after TURP?

Enlargement or regrowth of the prostate occurs in about 75% patients that underwent TURP. Although a larger portion of the prostate is removed, the gland can grow back again causing the original problems to recur which is usually after 5-10 years, and based on the clinical condition another surgery might be recommended.
