FAQ’S
What is angioplasty surgery?
Coronary angioplasty, also called percutaneous coronary intervention, is a procedure used to open or remove blocked coronary arteries. This procedure uses a small balloon catheter, which is inserted into a blocked blood vessel to help dilate and improve blood flow to the heart. The angioplasty surgery is often combined with a stent placement surgery which helps open the artery, thereby reducing the risk of narrowing. In rare cases, bare metal stents can be used. Angioplasty is often used to quickly open a blocked artery during a heart attack and reduce damage to the heart.
How serious is an angioplasty surgery?
As with all types of surgery, angioplasty also carries a few risks or complications. However, the risk of serious problems is low. Complications can occur during or after an angioplasty. Bleeding or bruising under the skin where the catheter is inserted is quite common.
More serious complications are less common but can include:
- Damage to the artery where the sheath is inserted
- Allergic reaction to the contrast medium used during the procedure
- Damage to the heart arteryÂ
- Excessive bleeding
- Heart attack, stroke, or death
Is angioplasty a major surgery?
An Angioplasty Surgery Doctor performs this procedure under local anesthesia. First, they make an incision in the arm or groin and then insert a catheter with a small inflated balloon at the end of the artery. Using an x-ray the doctor will guide the catheter through the blocked coronary artery. Once in position, the balloon is inflated to dilate the artery. The fatty deposits or plaque are pushed against the wall of the artery opening the way for blood circulation.
In some cases, the catheter also contains a stainless steel mesh called a stent. The stent is used to keep the blood vessel open. After the balloon is out, the doctor can remove the catheter. This process can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours.
What is the difference between a stent and angioplasty?
Angioplasty is a procedure which is performed to open up narrow or blocked blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. These blood vessels are called coronary arteries. The coronary artery stent is a small wire mesh tube that extends into the coronary artery. Usually, a stent is placed during or immediately after angioplasty.
How long does it take to recover from angioplasty?
If you have planned coronary angioplasty which is not an emergency, it usually takes one week to return to work. However, if the angioplasty is performed as an emergency case, for example after a heart attack, it may take several weeks or months to recover completely and return to work.
